London and Essex Wildlife Education: Details about wild Fox in the UK

Well identified by their narrow and protruding snouts, red color, and fluffy red tail with white tip, foxes are medium sized wild dogs. Fox is a collective name of more than 37 species but only 12 species of this can be termed as true foxes. Foxes are referred to by different names with male foxes widely known as dogs and vixens to refer to female foxes.

Wild foxes have a life expectancy of 10 years but only few attain this age due to diseases and hunting. On average, a fox weigh about 5.5 kg with an average body length of 25 inches. The appearance of a fox will highly be determined by its habitat but all foxes have busy tails, an unmistakable sharp muzzle and pointed ears. Foxes are classified as either fennec, arctic, red and grey foxes mostly based on where they live and their physical appearance. Most foxes have white bellies and their body fur may either be red orange or grayish depending whether it is the red or gray fox in question. The color of their fur has also been found to change with seasons with some appearing brown in summer with a different color such as white in winter.

With a daily consumption of about 1 kg of food per day, great part of their diet comprise of small invertebrates such as amphibians which they hunt using the pouncing technique. British foxes, depending on their availability, may also consume fruits and vegetables. A recent research on foxes has revealed that foxes are fond of burying excess foods during abundance for consumption during times of scarcity and dry spells. Fox may also feed on circuses and are highly active at night.

Fox are fond of leaving close to humans but may surprisingly attack humans through bites. North America is predominantly a hub of red foxes although few gray foxes may be found sparsely distributed. Apart from occupying forests and wooded areas, foxes have been migrating to towns to start an urban life which surprisingly they have been able to adapt well. When of young age, they prefer to live in families and groups but separate when of age to start life alone or in pairs. When it’s cold such as winter, they prefer living in underground dens, rocks and hollow logs.

Foxes mostly litter in late winter giving birth to about five blind pups. Young pups weigh an average of 4 ounces at birth and do not open their eyes till they are about 9 days old. Red foxes often give birth to a larger litter than grey foxes although this may not hold true always.

English foxes communicate using their ears and postures. Foxes portray both contact and interactions calls. The most famous sound is the wow wow sound but foxes also whine. In rare circumstances, foxes may also produce the waaaah sound especially during the mating season. When in a threat of danger, foxes bark and surprisingly, they may also cough in an attempt to communicate with one another.

The different types of foxes have been found to compete with one another with red foxes outdoing the others due to their large and massive body. This is mostly observed during scarcity of food. Wolves also kill foxes especially in disputes over carcasses and the relationship between foxes and other animals such as coyotes has mostly been observed to be very aggressive.

Fox hunting has been recognized as a sport in many areas and North America is not an exception. Hunters always find great amusement and fun in hunting both the grey fox and red fox majorly on the way they behave during hunting such as running, Man has always been a threat to red foxes mostly for their far which has posed a major threat as far as their survival is concerned.
